As announced on May 13, 2020, instead of the prior investment requirement, a composite criterion of investment and turnover would be utilized for MSME classification. The following are the new MSMEs classification criteria:
Micro: Investments of up to Rs. 1 crore and turnover of up to Rs. 5 crores.

Existing MSMEs will be classed using the new criteria, and they will be forced to re-register using the new procedure. They have, however, been allowed a transition period until March 31, 2021, which implies that if a company was founded before June 30, 2020, its registration will be valid until March 31, 2021. - The unique Udyog Aadhaar Number will be included in the Udyog Aadhaar Acknowledgement, which will be generated and delivered to the email address indicated in the UAM.

As of June 2, 2021, the Udyam portal, a free MSME registration website introduced by the government last year, had 31.56 organizations. The following changes have been made to the Udyam registration procedure:
The Notification establishes a new registration for MSMEs known as Udyam registration. This method, like the earlier Udyog Aadhaar Registration, is based on self-declaration and does not need the uploading of documents.
